The Society of Camera Operators participated in this year’s annual Cine Gear Expo LA 2015 exhibits and seminars, held in June 2015 at The Studios at Paramount in Hollywood, California.  The SOC presented an informative panel discussion to a full screening room called “Exploring The Key Relationship Between the Director and Operator.”

The panel was made up of operators Robert Reed Altman (Bobby), SOC (Bones, Chuck, Lost, The O.C., etc.), Paul Babin, SOC (CSI: Miami, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Lost Skull, U2 3D, The Abyss, etc.), and Steven Fracol, SOC (Green Lantern, Sons of Anarchy, Scandal, Breaking In, etc.), and Directors, Anne Renton (Bones, The Perfect Family, Love is Love, etc.) and Randall Zisk, Director & Producer (Bones, Scandal, Madam Secretary, etc.)

Producers Guild of America member and PGA New Media Council Board Delegate, John Canning (VP Interactive Experiences, NBC, Producer/Director/Photographer with Media Sherpa) served as moderator of a lively conversation addressing the panelists perspective on the unique relationship dynamic between the director and operator, and why this partnership is key to the production and ways to strengthen the creativity and communication.
