In Loving Memory of Mark Milsome

On the night of November 18th 2017, director of photography and camera operator Mark Milsome was tragically killed shooting a stunt sequence on location in Ghana.

Everyone who had the great fortune of knowing Mark is devastated by the loss of a truly exceptional man. Kind, generous, openhearted, clever, funny, loyal, compassionate and indisputably talented, Mark was respected and adored by his colleagues, friends and family.

Mark was a true cinephile and had an insightful and encyclopaedic knowledge of film. He loved his work and the adventures it entailed. Having grown up on film sets as a child, he transformed his passion into his profession. He loved the camaraderie of the crew family and thrived on the collaborative creative process. With a career spanning thirty years he rose from clapper loader to cinematographer, working with some of the finest filmmakers and cinematographers: Steven Spielberg, Stephen Frears, Richard Eyre, Nicholas Hytner, Mark Herman, Marc Evans, Marc Forster, James Marsh, Andrew Dunn, Graham Frake, Fabien Wagner, Benoit Delhomme, Roberto Schaefer, Seamus McGarvey and Remi Adefarasin, amongst others.

Above and beyond his work, he loved his life with his soulmate and wife, Andra, and their beloved daughter Alice. Mark and Andra were meant for each other. They shared the same values in life, always expressed with love, a sense of fun and humour. And most of all they shared a profound love for Alice.

Please consider honoring Mark by contributing to a memorial fund for Andra and Alice.

In Loving Memory of Albert Bettcher, SOC

written by his daughter Nancy Hurley

Al Bettcher, SOC a camera operator and a proud member of the SOC, died peacefully at home in Pasadena on Dec. 21, 2017, at age 97. He was thoughtful and kind, honest and principled, and meticulously organized. Everybody who met him adored him. He never stopped being positive and pleasant. He was widowed last year after a 75-year marriage to his wife, Connie. He was a wonderful father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

He started his career with the 168th Signal Photo Corp in WWII. After training at Camp Crowder, MO and Queens, NY, he shipped off to Germany. After the war he filmed the Japanese War Crimes Trials in the Philippines. When he returned home, he started out at the Columbia still lab, where he worked for 7 years before breaking in as an assistant cameraman on the feature Overexposed. He assisted for 9 years, then rose to operator. He has nearly 50 years of credits to his name, including the original Blade Runner, King Kong, Body Heat, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the original Batman series and its 1967 feature, Breathless, Lovespell, Pal Joey, Bye Bye Birdie, Pepe, three different Three Stooges movies, and countless television shows. He was the hand-held cameraman on The Graduate – those are his feet in the flippers. He was given an SOC Lifetime Achievement Award in 1990, and he was inducted into the Academy for Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1985.

Although he retired, he continued to keep up with the profession, reading all the magazines – American Cinematographer, International Cinematographers Guild, and SOC Camera Operator – from cover to cover each month. He was working his way through the screeners the Academy sent him this year. He had a lifelong love of music and had an extensive collection of jazz cds and records. He saw Hamilton just a few weeks ago and thought it was terrific. Most of all, he enjoyed the company of his family, especially his great-granddaughter, Aurelia, who called him Great Grandpa Owl. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Society of Camera Operators Announces the 2017 Technical Achievement Recipient

The Society of Camera Operators (SOC) is proud to announce the 2017 recipient of the Technical Achievement Award. The Award is given to a manufacturer or technology that has demonstrated superior engineering, advancement of camera operation, and substantial facilitation of the craft. This year’s recipient is DJI’s Ronin 2.

The DJI Ronin 2 was chosen as the 2017 winner because of its impact to many aspects of camera operating. The uniquely versatile 3-axis camera stabilization system can be used on car mounts, cable cam, jib, body worn mounts as a hot head, and even Steadicam. And the adaptability of the equipment improves the ultimate shot while helping to keep production on schedule.

The Technical Achievement Award will be presented at our 2018 Lifetime Achievement Awards evening on Saturday, February 3, 2018 hosted at the Loews Hollywood Hotel.
