SOC Technical Achievement Awards 2018

Welcome to the Society of Camera Operators’ Technical Achievement Award online submission. This online submission is open from April 15, 2017 until October 16, 2017 and there is a $450 administrative fee, per submission. You are more than welcome to submit more than one technology product per company.

Please keep in mind the Awards is for technology that is used by the camera operator, camera crew and on-set productions. Added value is given to technologies that increase the safety, efficiency and ease of production.

Once all submissions are reviewed, the Technical Committee will set up an in-person review day (demo days) where the top submissions will have the opportunity to present in a hands-on fashion of their technology. Please anticipate communication back from the Technical Committee no later than October 30, 2017.

Once all of the in-person reviews are conducted, then the committee voting will start and a Lifetime Technical Achievement recipient will be chosen and announced. The SOC’s Lifetime Technical Achievement Award will be presented at the Awards on February 3, 2018 at the Loews Hollywood Hotel.

The Award Criteria is as follows:

To qualify for a Technical Achievement Award, the technical development and the company and/or individuals responsible for it must meet the following criteria for technical excellence:

  1. The development must be either:
    a.   A completely new, important and lasting device or technique, or
    b.   An essential and lasting innovation, which modifies existing equipment, product or technique, or
    c.   A significant improvement on, or adjunct to, existing equipment product or technique that is utilized during camera operating.
  2. The development or innovation must have been in practical use for a sufficient length of time in order to demonstratively prove to its users that its use has significantly and substantially facilitated the craft of camera operating.
