DESCRIPTION:The SOC is offering Gear-Head/Wheels Training Sessions for members to sharpen their operating craft. The sessions provide the opportunity to spend time on two systems—Panhead and NODO—that are available in the SOC’s Burbank offices. The training is available to all members in good standing and is by appointment only. \nEach session is 1.5 hours—they are NOT instructor led. SUMMARY:So You Want To Be An "A" Camera Operator
DESCRIPTION:(Hint: It’s more than just pan\, tilt\, invoice)\nA member led Q&A about the process and mentality required to be a top notch “A” Camera Operator. This live in person session is limited to thirty members in good standing in all SOC membership categories. \nEach attendee will be required\, upon sign up\, to submit 5 questions pertaining to the job of an A camera operator. The panel of instructors will guide the conversation based on these questions and candidly address and discuss these issues that are most pressing for those in attendance. Possible topics may include but are not limited to: \n\nWhat do you do when the director and the DP are asking for different things?\nWhat do you do when an AD is pushing you at every moment?\nHow do you deal with method actors who may not want to hear from you?\nWhat part does the A camera operator play in run the set?\n\nIn section two of the workshop\, attendees will move into smaller groups and work one on one with each of the instructors. This section is designed for a deeper dive into challenges and topics in a more personal setting. \nEach group of 6 will spend 15 minutes with each instructor asking any questions they would like in a “speed mentoring” style. After 15 minutes\, the groups will rotate so they can ask questions of the next instructor. \nThis in person workshop is limited to thirty attendees and be asked to pre submit questions in the registration process to assist in shaping the days topics. \nTo complete your registration you must also pay for your seat. Pay for your seat by filling out the credit card authorization that you will receive once you complete your registration via email or by logging on to the event page on SOC.org and clicking the payment button. There will be a demo of the new remote head shaker feature available in both handheld and desk-controlled modes. \nExperience the UFO. Mike Anderson ( Key Grip extraordinaire ) will be on sight to demo what a 90’ telescopic custom construction crane with a remote mounted 45’ Technocrane is capable of range 120’ Techno. It’s a lesson in teamwork and co-operation\, with discussion and clips being screened. Topics to be presented: \n\nHow the DG and Op figure out the best approach to complex shots.\nWe will screen a few shots and discuss how the decision was made to choose the platform and how the shot was accomplished.\nSetting up the dolly for an operator vs setting it up for a remote head.\nWhen to go remote and when not to.\nIn moments of unpredictable action\, how the dolly grip can help “find” shots.\nHow to safely photograph stunts and shots involving gunfire or explosions and what role does the DG play in these situations.\nBig dolly or small dolly?  How to choose..\nThe comm system.  How to best to make use of it.\nThe best use of mounting a monitor on the dolly.  When to use it and when to ignore it.\nChoosing the right tool / camera platform.  Why this is critical.\nTelescoping cranes vs fixed cranes vs jib arms\n\n1:00 – 3:00pm will be a presentation from hosts Peter Rosenfeld\, SOC and Brad Rea. DESCRIPTION:Announcing Camera Operator Workshop: “Cranes and Gimbals” May 31 – June 2\, 2024\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Registration is now open! \nJoin the Society of Camera Operators for this two and a half days comprehensive workshop focusing on cranes and gimbals for Camera Operators. The workshop will encompass ample hands-on gear\, demonstrations\, lecture\, and one on one discussions with the instructors. \nCranes: \nAn in depth look at the multiple choices and specific uses of cranes and their remote heads. Both telescopic (technocranes) and fixed arm cranes (Jibs) will be discussed. This will include instruction and hands on demonstrations. Topics will include: \n\nSize and Space\nStabilization needs\nCrane mobility needs\, terrain\, crane car or base\nRemote head control options\n\nGimbals: \nFull explanation and instruction on the uses\, needs\, camera builds and techniques of the popular Gimbals available. This workshop will include hands on work and lengthy instruction of the following: \n\nWhy use a gimbal -vs- Steadicam\nWhich Gimbal to use\, buy or rent\nWhen to use a gimbal and when not to!\nBuilding the perfect camera setup for a gimbal that can convert quickly to Steadicam\, Handheld or conventional setups. This will include lens changes and the use of counterweights. What plates and specialty gear is needed for the best\, compact camera setup. What cameras are best for Gimbal use!\n(2) persons operating -vs- “majestic” or solo work.\nBody harness choices\, why and when to use these.
